One village at a time.

Ukraine Mutual Aid is a direct response organization providing aid to one Ukrainian village at a time.

Our mission is to help small village-based Ukrainian communities receive the aid they need and assist in the re-stabilization of their infrastructure. Our mission works with just one village at a time to ensure nobody slips through the cracks.

The Village That Inspires Us

Kinne village is located in Eastern Ukraine. It’s a typical green and tidy Ukrainian settlement, built in the middle of the ancient steppe. The landscape is open, the sky is deep, the winds are powerful. This picture is complete with herds of horses.

Horse riding and breeding has been a long-established tradition in these parts. Horses have been raised here since 1936. The Soviet government established this village as a State Horse Stud for the Red Army, as a military resource. Many years have passed since then, but the Lozova Horse Stud (Kin’ means Horse in Ukrainian, thus the name Kinne) is still breeding horses, namely a famous Ukrainian Riding Breed and the Orlovsky Trotter. Horses from this stud participated in many races and tournaments in the Soviet Union and abroad. They are still renown in modern-day independent Ukraine. A hippodrome and Zoo were built around the Stud which now has a population of around 600 people. Some of the village youth naturally migrated to the cities but there has always been enough work to keep the small community alive.

A Village at War

Currently, some people from the district have returned to the village, mostly from the city of Kharkiv, which was mercilessly shelled by the Russian Air Force since the first days of the war. Families have had to make a heartbreaking decision to evacuate to the western parts of the country and even abroad to Poland. The rest of community is staying put, many of them torn out of their normal lives, with no employment and no idea what to expect.

The government does its best to support the citizens, but most people are food insecure and lack resources that require them to be able to stay mobile.

Our initiative began unofficially, wiring small amounts of money directly to villagers and community leaders. American dollars go a long way in Ukraine, and your donation can help somebody fuel their vehicles, access safe transport, medical treatment and other necessities.

We’ve been there, we know our way around, and are in touch with community leaders. The help we are currently able to provide is as direct as it gets.
